This year I'm not allowed to go up the stairs of each house with the girl while she trick or treats. She's "too big" for that.

I really don't want to go to the dentist today. How bad can it be to live with a broken tooth?

Do you have a dentist that you like? Do they use gas or prescribe tranquilizers? I cracked a tooth last night and need to see someone soon.

Listening to KUOW this morning, I was appalled to hear Robert Fulghum refer to a woman as "that lady doctor". REALLY? In 2009? Guess he didn't learn how not to be sexist in kindergarten.

reposting this from [info]the_siobhan who is reposting from another friend.

Casey is battling Osteosarcoma. The cancer has metastasized into her lungs and right shoulder. She will also be having her right leg and part of her pelvis amputated this September. This is because while the tumor has shrunk a little between it and the chemo her leg has fractured badly just from walking on it.

A week or so ago, Casey entered into a contest by Victoria's Secret. The prize is a trip for two to New York City for 3 days of pampering at a spa, staying in a nice hotel, a shopping trip and seeing a city Casey has never been to.

This is somebody who could really use a break from everything she's dealing with. Click on the link to vote for her at profile 880.

When it comes to Twilight fandom, there really is nothing so crazy and over the top that it will be instantly recognized as mockery.

I'm planning to do the online Rosetta Stone, and I cannot decide which language. Rhiannon has a little Spanish, and Ramon has some Portuguese and is doing the Spanish Rosetta Stone at work[1], so Spanish could be a family thing. I've never been terribly interested in learning Spanish on its own merits though. I studied German in high school and college, and have about a preschool level grasp of the language[2]. I would LOVE to learn more if just to stop being annoyed by German music[3]. Thing is, while I DO have at least 2 people to speak German with, it wouldn't be quite as useful. I'm also slightly intrigued by the idea of French. It might be useful if I ever run away to Canada, but it isn't a serious contender. Oh, LJ, tell me what to do[4].

[1]Where they have it available for use in the library.
[2]Maybe better than that actually. It was functional for use with German tourists when I worked at the Waikiki Aquarium. I am just insanely shy about it and WILL not speak it unless I have to even with people who love me and would undoubtedly be very sympathetic and helpful conversation partners.
[3]I can't really enjoy a song because my brain gets about 20-30% of the meaning and spends the whole time grasping for the rest of it.
[4]And then I will take your advice under consideration and make my own decision.

That messed me up

The heat wave seems to have broken! It is only 66 right now[1]and the forecast highs have been adjusted down to the low 80's for the weekend.

[1]It is currently cooler in Seattle than in Toronto. All is well with the world.

Go, Rhiannon!

Rhiannon and I went to the library today, where she read the last two books that she needed to complete her summer reading program certificate. We've done summer reading program since she was 2, but this is the first year that she read all 10 books on her own. She is incredibly proud of herself, and I'm pretty freaking proud of her too. She got to choose a book, got her name put up on the library wall, and got a family pass to the Burke Museum. Very exciting stuff. While she isn't behind schedule for a kid going into 1st grade, reading doesn't come really easily for Rhiannon. Those 10 books represent a lot of sounding out and struggling and sticking to it when she wanted to quit. Okay, I'm teary eyed mama proud of her.

Rhiannon's temp is normal today. It seems to have been a fast and especially nasty virus. I'm still going to make sure to keep her cool today, but with no fever we can actually do that in places other than home. yay. Today's plan is to go to the library for a bit and then to a movie.

We finally got sick of the endless flood of phone spammers that make it around the Do Not Call thing and got rid of our landline. I think most of you have my cell number it is the (253)number. If you need it just comment.

I'm a bit stressed and have definitely switched over into crisis management mode, but I am also finally getting really excited about seeing everybody in just a few days. Like 3!!! *fingers crossed* that I'll have time for more than drive by hugs.

Orkester Zirkonium...

makes me wan to dance the Horah all night long. [1] Went to the Can Can's Folklife afterparty with Ramon. We mostly went to see Bad Mitten Orchestrsa, who were awesome. we also saw the Bad Things, who were sadly the low point of the evening, though the Castaways were amazing, as usual in the numbers that the danced to. Orkester Zirkonium finishes up the evening. Imagine a Klezmer marching band with occasional South American beats, and you'll have a good idea of what they sound like. They were amazing. I also had very many absinthe cocktails. A bunch of Green Fairies[2] and several Sazeracs. I am remarkably sober all things considered.[3]

[1]Proving once again that I am possibly the world's most Jewish Gentile.
[2]A yummy house cocktail containing absinthe, chartreuse, rum, lime and mint.
[3]By which I mean that I am TRASHED, but am still able to correct my typos.

I spent much of my morning getting a sales post put together for Fatshionista, and then forgot the LJ cut. I can't seem to edit it until it has been posted, which it probably won't be due to lack of cut. However, I don't seem to be able to make a cut work today anyway, at least it wasn't showing up in the preview when I attempted to repost.

Nevermind.  I R dumb, and it is all fixed now.

Anybody want most of a brick of Lush's Caca Rouge henna? I tried it and didn't feel like it did much for me.
